How to Pack Shipping Items Like a Pro

A product’s packaging more or less shares the same importance as the product itself. It’s your product’s unique packaging that helps customers differentiate between other brands.
However, it still remains unaddressed.

In fact, many ecommerce businesses don’t pay attention to product packaging at all, thinking the product and its performance is more important. No doubt the product has to be good to attract customers in the first place. Yet, good product packaging can actually play a crucial role in your product’s sales success or failure.

Still a little unsure regarding how to pack shipping items?

Some Packing Requirements to Remember

Proper packaging of goods and products ensures damage-free shipping of all air, ground, and ocean freight movements. Proper packaging of shipped items promotes safe transportation which will give you peace of mind when the shipments are on its way to customers.
Keep the following in mind when packing products for shipment:

Ø Ensure each piece can withstand 60 lbs per square foot of pressure

Ø Shipment must be to tolerate 60 seconds of rain

Ø All packaged items must easily withstand 24 minimum hours of actual transit time

Ø Dangerous goods/hazardous materials shipments must comply with Dangerous Goods Regulations

Ø Firearms should be packed in a hard case designed to hold and safely transport firearms. Additionally, they must be unloaded

Are you shipping items of a perishable nature or those susceptible to leakage? Such products must be packed in solid and leak-proof boxes, containers or bags. For more information about perishable goods, visit IATA’s Perishable Cargo Regulations.

Leave Space around the Package

Any leftover space after an item has been placed in the box must be filled with packing materials such as packing peanuts or air pillows. Ideally, at least 2 inches of space around the item (on all sides) must be left for this.
Shipping fragile items? Consider using double-boxing technique and 2-3 inches of bubble wrap around the item.

Repackage Electronics

It’s a good idea to repackage any electronics, items such as a tablet or smartphone. Packages that electronic devices come in at the retail store are often too flimsy and thin. Safe transportation of products isn’t guaranteed!
You also need to be aware of regulations that cover shipping certain items like lithium batteries.

Pack Like a Pro – Tips to Ensure an Undamaged Shipment Arrives to Customers

Many shipping companies prefer packaging items prior to shipping for their clients but a fee is usually charged for this service. Want to lower shipping costs yet not uncompromised on timely and safe shipping?

These tips will help:

Ø Use proper inner packaging (Styrofoam inserts, peanuts, and bubble wrap)

Ø Improper inner packaging like cloth and blankets must be avoided
